Jesus was not just a good man and a great moral teacher, but claimed to be the Son of God and the long awaited “Messiah” or King of the Jews. He changed history not through conquest or inventions, business or literature, but by reuniting two worlds: the human and the divine.
C.S. Lewis, a well-known Christian author, wrote of Jesus, “Either this man was, and is, the son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronising nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”
Although God made humanity to experience his love and delight, we have by our own actions turned our back on Him. Through Jesus’ death he made it possible for every human being to cancel their guilt and shame and to know God’s great love once again. When we choose to open ourselves to Jesus, admit we need His help and we surrender to his guidance in our daily lives, then he restores our true identity as his loved children, grows good character in us, gives us a sense of purpose and guarantees our eternal destiny.
